ZEBRA

Zebra is a contemporary dance work that explores the complex intersections of age, identity, and the social-political landscape through the physical expression of two women. The duet, featuring Sally Anne Friedland and Dana Markus, is a poignant exploration of the tensions and contrasts that shape their realities.

The piece follows two women of differing generations—each struggling to confront the societal pressures and political challenges of the present. Through the choreographic lens of Avi Kaiser and Sergio Antonino, the performers grapple with the balance between strength and vulnerability, testing the boundaries of their physicality and emotional resilience. Like the zebra, with its contrasting stripes, the dancers carry the weight of their individual burdens while simultaneously navigating their shared experience.

Sally Anne Friedland, who has not performed on stage as a dancer for over 30 years, returns to the stage in a new phase of her life. This return is a bold and deeply personal journey, one in which she collaborates closely with the choreographers Kaiser and Antonino. Having worked together in the past, particularly with Friedland serving as dramaturge, the three share a foundation of trust and creative intimacy that allows for the development of a work with raw emotional depth.

In Zebra, Friedland is joined by Dana Markus, a younger dancer and award-winning creator. The combination of their distinct perspectives and experiences creates a dynamic of contrast and connection that drives the narrative of the work. Through their movements, the dancers expose the frailty and strength that define the human condition in contemporary times.

Zebra is a study of dualities—the clash of generations, of power and fragility, and of personal and political strife. It captures the push and pull of everyday survival in our complex world, offering a visual and emotional language that speaks to the universal experience of resilience in the face of adversity
